For savety reasons the Dutch governement evacuated the 650 inhabitants of Schokland in 1859. So ended a living on an island that was getting smaller after every storm, the costs of coastdefending to high. On the picture the harbour
of Emmeloord, still used as a shelter for storms on the Zuiderzee. Living there was the lightkeeper and there was a small shop for provisions.
